# Catalog

All content in Studio is organized in a **5-level hierarchy**. Understanding this structure is essential before you start building — each level has a specific purpose and nests inside the one above it.

```
Collection (Catalog / Pathway)  └─ Index (Course)      └─ Section (Lesson / Module)          └─ Component (Topic / Unit)              └─ Element (Question / Activity)
```

| Level | Also called | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Collection** | Catalog, Pathway | The top-level grouping — a full subject or learning track |
| **Index** | Course | A course within the pathway — covers a defined topic |
| **Section** | Lesson, Module | A lesson within the course — a logical grouping of content |
| **Component** | Topic, Unit | A topic within the lesson — contains the actual quiz/activity |
| **Element** | Question, Activity | A single interactive item — a question, video, or task |

A typical structure:

```
Collection: Islamic Studies Year 7  └─ Index: Quran Recitation      └─ Section: Surah Al-Fatiha          └─ Component: Vocabulary Quiz              └─ Element: Multiple Choice — What does "Alhamdulillah" mean?              └─ Element: Fill in the Blank — "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-___"
```

## Collections & Pathways

A **Collection** (also called a Pathway or Catalog) is the top-level container for your content. Everything you build in Studio — courses, lessons, quizzes — lives inside a collection.

<a id="accessing-collections"></a>

### Accessing Collections

1. Click **Catalog** in the Studio navigation.
2. You’ll see all existing collections displayed as cards.
3. Use **search** to find a collection by name.
4. Toggle between **grid** and **list** view.

<a id="creating-a-collection"></a>

### Creating a Collection

1. Click **\+ New** or **Create Collection** from the Catalog page.
2.  Fill in the details:

| Field | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **Name** | The collection title — e.g. “Islamic Studies Year 8” |
| **Status** | Select public or private |
| **Image** | A cover image for the collection card |

3. Save — the collection is created and appears in the Catalog.

<a id="organizing-collections"></a>

### Organizing Collections

| Approach | Example |
| --- | --- |
| By subject | “Arabic Language”, “Islamic Studies”, “Mathematics” |
| By year group | “Year 7 Science”, “Year 8 English” |
| By level | “Beginner Quran”, “Intermediate Quran” |
| By term | “Term 1 Curriculum”, “Term 2 Curriculum” |

<a id="duplicating-a-collection"></a>

### Duplicating a Collection

Use the **Duplicate** option to clone the entire collection including its courses, sections, and components. You can then edit the content for the new group.

> **Caution**
>
> Duplicating a large collection with many courses and elements can take a moment. Wait for the duplication to complete before navigating away.

* * *

<a id="courses--sections"></a>

## Courses & Sections

Once you have a collection, you build the internal structure: **Indexes** (courses) contain **Sections** (lessons), which contain **Components** (topics).

<a id="courses-indexes"></a>

### Courses (Indexes)

A **Course** (called an Index in Studio) is the second level — a defined topic or unit that sits inside a collection.

<a id="creating-a-course"></a>

#### Creating a Course

1. Open a collection from the Catalog.
2. Click **\+ Add Index** or **Create Course**.
3. Enter a title and optional cover image.
4. Save — the course appears inside the collection.

From inside a collection you can reorder, duplicate, edit, or delete courses. Deleting a course removes all sections and components inside it.

<a id="lessons-sections"></a>

### Lessons (Sections)

A **Lesson** (called a Section) is the third level — a logical grouping of topics within a course.

<a id="creating-a-section"></a>

#### Creating a Section

1.  Open a course (index).
2. Click **\+ Add Section** or **Create Lesson**.
3.  Enter a title — e.g. “Introduction to Makharij”.
4. Save — the section is added to the course.

Drag sections to reorder them. Delete a section to remove it and all components inside it.

<a id="topics-components"></a>

### Topics (Components)

A **Topic** (called a Component) is the fourth level — the actual activity or quiz unit that students interact with.

<a id="creating-a-component"></a>

#### Creating a Component

1.  Open a section (lesson).
2. Click **\+ Add Component** or **Create Topic**.
3.  Enter a title — e.g. “Vocabulary Quiz”.
4. Save — the component is created inside the section.

Components are the containers for Elements (questions and activities). Once created, open the component in the Quiz Builder to add individual elements.

> **Tip**
>
> Name components descriptively — “Week 3 Vocabulary Quiz” is clearer than “Quiz 1” when you have many components across a course.

* * *

<a id="elements"></a>

## Elements

**Elements** are the fifth and final level — the individual questions, activities, and interactive items that students actually respond to inside a component.

<a id="adding-elements"></a>

### Adding Elements

1. Open a component from inside a section.
2. You’ll enter the Quiz Builder view.
3. Click **\+ Add Element** to insert a new question or activity.
4. Choose the element type from the type picker.
5. Configure the element — add content, set the correct answer, adjust settings.
6. Save — the element is added to the component.

<a id="reordering--duplicating"></a>

### Reordering & Duplicating

Drag elements up or down within a component to change their order. Use the element menu to **Duplicate** an element — useful for reusing a question format with different content.

> **Caution**
>
> Deleting an element removes it from all existing student attempts that reference it. Grades and attempt history for that element will no longer be accessible.

* * *

<a id="quiz-builder"></a>

## Quiz Builder

The **Quiz Builder** is Studio’s editor for creating interactive questions and activities. It opens when you enter a component and gives you full control over every element inside it.

<a id="accessing-the-quiz-builder"></a>

### Accessing the Quiz Builder

1. Navigate to a component inside any section and course.
2. Click the component to open it.
3. The Quiz Builder view loads — you’ll see any existing elements listed.
4. Click **\+ Add Element** to insert a new question or activity.

<a id="building-a-quiz"></a>

### Building a Quiz

1.  Click **\+ Add Element** — choose a type (e.g. Multiple Choice)
2. Enter the **question text** or prompt
3. Add **answer options** and mark the correct one(s)
4. Set **points value** for the element
5. Optionally add a **hint** or **feedback messages**
6.  Repeat for each question

<a id="supported-media"></a>

### Supported Media

You can add media to any question prompt or answer option:

- **Images** — upload or select from Assets
- **Audio** — upload MP3 or select a reciter clip
- **Video** — embed a video URL or upload a clip
- **Text formatting** — bold, italic, and Arabic text support

The Quiz Builder auto-saves as you work — no need to click a save button after every change.

> **Tip**
>
> Preview your quiz after adding all elements — some element types behave differently on mobile. Test on both desktop and mobile layouts before assigning.

<a id="points"></a>

### Points

The **Points value** sets the score awarded for a correct answer — default is 1. Points across all elements in a component are summed to produce the component score.
