# Recite Quran

Canvas includes a full recitation and practice suite — record yourself reciting any verse and receive instant AI feedback on Tajweed, pronunciation, and memorization errors. Practice with interactive exercises, build foundational Arabic knowledge, set daily goals, and track your progress verse by verse.

<a id="requirements"></a>

## Requirements

- A working **microphone** on your device with browser permission granted
- A quiet environment for accurate speech recognition
- Canvas\_Recite feature enabled for your organization

<a id="real-time-recitation"></a>

## Real-Time Recitation

Real-time recitation lets you record yourself reciting any verse and receive immediate AI feedback. The system uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) to capture your recitation and compares it word-by-word against the correct recitation.

<a id="starting-a-recitation-session"></a>

### Starting a Recitation Session

1. Open any Surah from the sidebar.
2. Switch to **Recite mode** using the mode switcher in the bottom toolbar.
3. The display updates — each verse now shows a **Record** button.
4. Click **Record** on the verse you want to recite.
5. A microphone indicator appears — begin reciting clearly.
6. Click **Stop** when you’ve finished the verse.

<a id="what-happens-after-you-stop"></a>

### What Happens After You Stop

Once you stop recording:

1. Your audio is sent to the AI evaluation system
2. The system transcribes your speech using ASR
3. It aligns your recitation word-by-word against the correct text
4. Errors are identified and categorised by type
5. Results appear on screen — words are colour-coded based on accuracy

The evaluation typically takes a few seconds.

<a id="reciting-multiple-verses"></a>

### Reciting Multiple Verses

Work through a full Surah in sequence: after receiving feedback on one verse, click **Next** to move to the following verse. Your results for each verse are saved as you go.

<a id="retrying-a-verse"></a>

### Retrying a Verse

Click **Retry** on the results screen to record the verse again. The new attempt is evaluated and saved alongside your previous attempts. Your full attempt history is accessible from the Statistics tab.

> **Caution**
>
> Recitation evaluation requires a stable internet connection. If your connection drops mid-recording, the evaluation may not complete — try again once your connection is restored.

<a id="recitation-feedback"></a>

## Recitation Feedback

After recording a verse, Canvas displays your results as colour-coded highlights on the Quranic text. Each colour represents a different type of error.

<a id="reading-the-feedback"></a>

### Reading the Feedback

| Highlight | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Green** | Correct — word was recited accurately |
| **Red** | Error — word had one or more mistakes |
| **Orange / Yellow** | Partial — word was mostly correct with minor issues |

Click on any highlighted word to see the specific error details.

<a id="error-types"></a>

### Error Types

**Tajweed Errors** — violations of the rules governing correct pronunciation:

- Not applying Ghunnah where required
- Incorrect Madd (elongation) length
- Missing Qalqalah on applicable letters
- Incorrect Idgham (merging) of sounds

**Verbal Errors** — the word was mispronounced:

- Substituting one letter sound for another
- Incorrect vowel sounds (harakat)
- Dropping or adding sounds that shouldn’t be there

**Waqf Errors** — incorrect stopping (or not stopping):

- Stopping where continuation is required
- Not pausing at a mandatory Waqf sign
- Pausing in the middle of a phrase that changes the meaning

**Memorization Errors** — the word was skipped, substituted, or said out of sequence:

- Saying a word from a different verse or Surah
- Skipping a word entirely
- Repeating a word that shouldn’t be repeated

<a id="recitation-score"></a>

### Recitation Score

| Score Range | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **90% – 100%** | Excellent — very few or no errors |
| **70% – 89%** | Good — minor errors to address |
| **50% – 69%** | Developing — noticeable errors, needs more practice |
| **Below 50%** | Needs significant practice before moving on |

> **Tip**
>
> Focus on one error type at a time. If you have both Tajweed and Verbal errors, work on getting the verbal pronunciation right first — then layer the Tajweed rules on top.

<a id="verse-practice"></a>

## Verse Practice

Verse Practice uses drag-and-drop exercises to help you connect Arabic words with their meanings and pronunciations.

<a id="accessing-verse-practice"></a>

### Accessing Verse Practice

1. Click **Practice** in the top navigation.
2. Select **Verses Practice** from the practice menu.
3. Choose the Surah you want to practice.

<a id="exercise-types"></a>

### Exercise Types

| Exercise | What you do |
| --- | --- |
| **Arabic → Translation** | Drag Arabic words to match their correct translation |
| **Arabic → Transliteration** | Drag Arabic words to match their correct romanized pronunciation |

<a id="how-an-exercise-works"></a>

### How an Exercise Works

1. A verse is displayed with Arabic words shown as draggable cards.
2. Translation or transliteration tiles are displayed in a separate area.
3. Drag each Arabic word to its matching tile.
4. Click **Submit** to check your answers.
5. Correct matches are highlighted in green; incorrect ones in red.
6. Click **Try Again** or **Next Verse** to continue.

> **Tip**
>
> Start with shorter Surahs (like those in Juz Amma) before moving to longer ones — they have fewer words per verse and are ideal for building confidence with the exercise format.

<a id="qari-practice"></a>

## Qari Practice

Qari Practice is a guided recitation exercise. An AI Qari recites a verse for you to listen to and model — then you record your own recitation and receive AI-powered feedback.

<a id="how-a-session-works"></a>

### How a Session Works

**Step 1 — Listen to the Qari**

- The AI Qari recites the verse
- Follow along with the Arabic text — words are highlighted as they are recited
- Listen as many times as you need

**Step 2 — Record Your Recitation**

- Click **Record** when you’re ready
- Recite the verse clearly into your microphone
- Click **Stop** when you’ve finished

**Step 3 — Receive Feedback**

- The AI evaluates your recording against the correct recitation
- Results appear as colour-coded word highlights on the verse text

<a id="memorization-mode"></a>

### Memorization Mode

Qari Practice also supports a memorization variant where words in the verse are progressively hidden, challenging you to recall them from memory.

1. Enable **Memorization mode** in the practice settings
2. Words in the verse are covered
3. Listen to the Qari, then recite from memory

> **Tip**
>
> Use the **Listen → Repeat** rhythm: listen to the Qari recite once, pause and repeat aloud without the audio, then record. This mirrors how Quran has traditionally been taught.

> **Caution**
>
> Qari Practice requires microphone access. If your browser prompts you for permission, click **Allow** — without it, recording cannot start.

<a id="alphabets--symbols"></a>

## Alphabets & Symbols

The Alphabets & Symbols section covers the building blocks of Quranic Arabic — letters, vowel marks, and Tajweed symbols.

<a id="smart-alphabets"></a>

### Smart Alphabets

The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters, each with up to four forms depending on its position in a word. Smart Alphabets exercises help you recognise each letter in all its forms, distinguish visually similar letters, and connect letter sounds to their written shapes.

A letter or form is displayed — identify it from a set of options. Progress through all 28 letters systematically.

<a id="vowel-mastery"></a>

### Vowel Mastery

Arabic short vowels (harakat) are small marks written above or below letters that change the pronunciation:

| Vowel Mark | Name | Sound |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **َ** (above) | Fatha | Short “a” sound |
| **ِ** (below) | Kasra | Short “i” sound |
| **ُ** (above) | Damma | Short “u” sound |
| **ْ** (above) | Sukun | No vowel — consonant stops |
| **ً ٍ ٌ** | Tanwin | Double vowel sounds (an, in, un) |

<a id="symbol-mastery"></a>

### Symbol Mastery

Tajweed symbols are special markers in the Quran that instruct the reciter on how to pronounce or treat specific sounds:

| Symbol | Name | Rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **مّ / نّ** | Shaddah | Double the letter sound |
| **ـٓ** | Madd | Elongate the vowel sound |
| **ۚ** | Waqf | Permitted stopping point |
| **ۛ** | Saktah | Momentary pause without breathing |

> **Tip**
>
> Master the harakat (vowel marks) before moving to Tajweed symbols — correct vowel reading is the foundation everything else is built on.

<a id="setting-goals"></a>

## Setting Goals

Canvas lets you set personal memorization goals to give your practice direction and help you stay on track.

<a id="goal-types"></a>

### Goal Types

| Goal Type | Example |
| --- | --- |
| **Verses per day** | Memorize 3 new verses every day |
| **Pages per day** | Complete 1 page per day |
| **Minutes per day** | Spend at least 20 minutes on memorization daily |

<a id="setting-a-goal"></a>

### Setting a Goal

1. Open **Memorize** from the top navigation.
2. Look for the **Goal** or **Settings** option in the memorization dashboard.
3. Choose your goal type and set your target.
4. Save — your goal is now active and tracked daily.

<a id="daily-streaks"></a>

### Daily Streaks

Your **streak** counts the number of consecutive days you’ve met your memorization goal:

- Complete your daily goal → streak increments by 1
- Miss a day → streak resets to zero
- Your **longest streak** is recorded separately

<a id="goal-progress-display"></a>

### Goal Progress Display

| Indicator | What it shows |
| --- | --- |
| **Today’s progress** | How much of today’s goal you’ve completed (e.g. 2 of 3 verses) |
| **Streak counter** | Current consecutive days streak |
| **Weekly overview** | A visual timeline of your activity across the current week |

> **Tip**
>
> Start conservatively — a goal you can consistently hit every day is far more effective than an ambitious goal you miss frequently.

* * *

<a id="tracking-progress"></a>

## Tracking Progress

Canvas tracks your memorization progress at multiple levels — individual verses, full pages, and globally across the entire Quran.

<a id="levels-of-progress-tracking"></a>

### Levels of Progress Tracking

| Level | What it tracks |
| --- | --- |
| **Verse level** | Which specific verses you’ve memorized within a Surah |
| **Page level** | How much of each Mushaf page is memorized |
| **Global level** | Your overall progress out of the full 604 pages of the Quran |

<a id="verse-level-progress"></a>

### Verse-Level Progress

| State | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Not started** | Verse hasn’t been attempted yet |
| **In progress** | Verse has been partially memorized |
| **Memorized** | Verse has been fully memorized and confirmed |

Click any verse to expand it and see which words you’ve marked as memorized vs. still learning. Once you can recite the verse from memory, click **Mark as Memorized**.

<a id="page--global-progress"></a>

### Page & Global Progress

The page progress view shows each of the 604 Mushaf pages with a completion percentage. The global progress indicator shows your memorization as a fraction of the full Quran — e.g. **42 / 604 pages memorized (7%)**.

<a id="timeline-view"></a>

### Timeline View

The memorization timeline gives a visual schedule of your activity — days you practiced, how much you covered, and where practice was missed.

> **Tip**
>
> Review previously memorized verses regularly — revisiting a verse you marked as memorized a week ago will test whether it has truly been retained.

> **Note**
>
> Progress is saved to your account and syncs across devices. You can start memorizing on one device and continue on another without losing your place.
